‘Using One Art to Describe Another’
The Hive, The Studio, Worcester
3rd January 2025
12-2 pm
£7
For music lovers, fans of Lind, and those interested in history or performance, ‘Using One Art to Describe Another’ is a fun afternoon and a writing workshop with a difference.
The workshop may help those who wish to enter the WLFF Jenny Lind Writing Competition, as we’ll share resources and information that could inspire your writing.
We’ll consider the challenge and opportunity of using one art to describe another during this workshop.
Nina and April will discuss the art of reviews in the 19th Century; together, we’ll investigate reviews about Lind as a touch-point to consider what our modern, lived-experience response to live performance might be.
April will use a selection of recordings and a live performance to allow the writers to practice describing sound and performance through live demonstration.
At the end of the workshop, there will be time for an informal read-through of any material the writers might wish to present in a rough draft. Or for any questions.
After the workshop, participants will be invited to nominate themselves for a chance to win a ticket for the show, ‘Echoes of Jenny Lind’ on the 1st of February at Huntingdon Hall, Worcester, where they will act as a LIVE reviewer during the performance (as they did historically). There are two reviewer positions up for grabs.
Writing started at this workshop would qualify as a competition entry (separate competition entry fee of £3, details below), and the workshop may inspire you to write something that could become a submission to the potential Anthology Call Out later in 2025.

Johanna Maria Lind (Madame Goldschmidt) (6 October 1820 – 2 November 1887) was a Swedish
opera singer, often called the "Swedish Nightingale". One of the most highly regarded singers of the
19th century, she performed in soprano roles in opera in Sweden and across Europe, and undertook
an extraordinarily popular concert tour of the United States.
"Jenny Lind has fairly enchanted me... her song with two concertante flutes is perhaps the most incredible feat in the way of bravura singing that can possibly be heard". - Ignaz Moscheles.
Lind lived her final years at Wynds Point, on the Malvern Hills. Her last public appearance was at a
charity concert at Royal Malvern Spa in 1883.
A chapel is named for Lind at the University of Worcester City Campus.
